COMS 3603 - Contemporary Culture and Rhetoric


This course explores the relationship between rhetoric and contemporary culture. Students examine the role of rhetorical theory in understanding identity, power, and communication in our current world.

Requisites: Soph or Jr or Sr
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to define and explain basic principles underlying contemporary and critical approaches to rhetoric.
  • Students will be able to develop and apply critical thinking and observation skills in evaluating discourse.
  • Students will be able to identify semantic differences across cultural groups in evaluating discourse.
  • Students will be able to critically analyze various types of participation in the public sphere with regard to contemporary culture and fandom.
  • Students will be able to evaluate their own engagement in the public sphere with regard to various types of public culture.
  • Students will be able to analyze the implications of fandom for interactions with media and others.
