JOUR 3200 - Ethics, Mass Media, and Society


This course teaches social responsibility to journalists and other media communicators. Students discuss professional ethical codes, responsibility of media for social change, and reaction to political and economic pressures. Students practice confronting ethical conflicts and making ethical decisions through analyzing real world case studies.

Requisites: (C or better in JOUR 2311 or concurrent) OR (JOUR Minor and JOUR 1050 and 2150) OR (Majors BC5374, BC5381, BJ6910, BS6922, BS6923, BS6924, or BS6925 AND Soph or higher)
Credit Hours: 3

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to recognize conflicts of interest and develop strategies to avoid them.
  • Students will be able to develop an ethical decision-making model and critically apply it to various media problems and cases.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the meaning of truth and its role in journalistic endeavors, both informational and advocacy/marketing.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate critical, ethical, and independent thinking.
  • Students will be able to apply professional ethical codes appropriate to the various fields in journalism.
  • Students will be able to analyze how current media corporate culture and multi-platform distribution of content influence ethics.
  • Students will be able to describe media’s responsibility to society and democracy.
  • Students will be able to describe the importance of diverse perspectives in news and strategic content.
  • Students will be able to describe what bias is and the influence it has on truth.
