ISE 4170 - Lean Manufacturing and Service Systems


This course focuses on tools for applying lean thinking, lean principles and lean methods in manufacturing and service systems. Students will learn basic methods of the lean production, such as value-stream mapping, 5(6)-S, continuous flow, Kanban, SMED, A3, and continuous improvement. The comparison between western and Japan manufacturing planning and control methods from an intercultural competence perspective is covered.The methods will be learned by practicing them in lab setting and in projects.

Requisites: ISE 3340 or ISE 3341and Warning: No credit ETM 4320 or ETM 4325

  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the elements of Japanese production management systems, its historical development, and its applicability in other countries.
  • Students will be able to ask questions related to industrial and production management methods in different cultures, to articulate answers, and initiate non-judgmental discussions about their advantages and disadvantages.
