ANTH 3820 - Cultures of the Mediterranean


This course explores the diverse societies of the Mediterranean region as a geographic and cultural unit of analysis that spans South and Southeast Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. The course provides insight into the various everyday experiences and perspectives of the peoples living in this multicultural region. Topics of exploration and analysis include migration, religion, gender, political integration, colonialism/Empire, ethnic conflict, urban development, transnational flows.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of historical and anthropological theories and studies of societies of the Mediterranean region.
  • Students will be able to explain how larger political, economic and environmental developments have affected the lives and experiences in various societies of the Mediterranean.
  • Students will be able to critically analyze complex political, economic, and cultural inequalities that have come to shape the region, including the legacy of various empires, colonial regimes, and nationalist movements.
  • Students will be able to gain empathy for the the experiences and perspectives of people (emic perspective) in various Mediterranean societies and cultures through examining ethnographic, literary, and audiovisual materials.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the cultural differences of Mediterranean societies in oral and written communication and to negotiate a shared understanding based on those differences.
  • Students will be able to ask questions about Mediterranean cultures whiile suspending judgment and demonstrating empathy in cultural interpretation.
  • Students will be able to interrogate their own assumptions, values, and beliefs in relation to Mediterranean cultures.
  • Students will be able to present, argue and defend oral arguments and analysis of cultural topics in communication assignments.
