Creating a Turnitin Assignment in Canvas

Description

Turnitin allows instructors to check student assignments for original work by comparing the text against their database of student work, websites, books, articles, etc.  Turnitin offers additional functionality via a suite of tools they call Feedback Studio.

Solution

Turnitin can be added to assignments in Canvas via the Turnitin Plagiarism Framework or Canvas LTI 1.3. Canvas LTI 1.3 offers the full functionality of Turnitin Feedback Studio. Compare the Turnitin LTI vs. Plagiarism Framework to determine which option meets your needs.

Plagiarism Framework

You can add Turnitin plagiarism detection to an existing Canvas assignment. This option does not provide the full functionality of Turnitin Feedback Studio.  It uses the existing Canvas assignment functionality, including their Speed Grader tool, but adds on the plagiarism detection from Turnitin. This functionality is similar to using Safe Assign in Blackboard.

Canvas LTI 1.3 Integration for Feedback Studio

If you would prefer to use the full functionality of Turnitin’s Feedback Studio including GradeMark and Peer Mark you will need to use the Turnitin LTI 1.3 integration for Canvas.

Outcome: Turnitin’s originality checker is now applied to your assignment.
