Background Information

  • Hans Bethe and Carl von Weizsäcker independently proposed the CNO cycle. Bethe's paper is on this topic is: Energy Production In Stars , H. A. Bethe, Phys. Rev. 55, 434 (1939). Another key contribution of Bethe to this field was the theoretical calculation of the fusion reaction p+p -> 2H + e +v. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1967, "for his contributions to the theory of nuclear reactions, especially his discoveries concerning the energy production in stars."

Faculty coordinators for Winter 2011 were Ken Hicks, Carl Brune, Charlotte Elster, Justin Frantz, Paul King, Daniel Phillips, Prakash, Julie Roche, and Andreas Schiller.
