Violence in any form is inconsistent with the values of Ohio University. As such, we believe that students have an obligation to deescalate conflict and/or remove themselves from dangerous situations if at all possible. If you have taken all prudent and precautionary measures to avoid an altercation, and violence is still unavoidable, you may use only the amount of force necessary to extricate yourself from the altercation. Failing to take advantage of an opportunity to remove oneself from the situation negates the claim of self-defense. Actions consistent with appropriate self-defense will be considered a mitigating factor in consideration of potential conduct action and/or sanctioning.
