BSO 2020 for CSD Students: Scheduling Your First-Semester Classes

How do I register for classes?
You need 2 websites to find and register for classes:
· Course Offerings: https://webapps.ohio.edu/classes/search.htm
· MyOHIO Student Center: https://sis.ohio.edu/student
How many classes should I take?
· Aim for 15 credit hours so that you are on pace to complete the degree in 4 years: 15 hours per semester x 2 semesters per year x 4 years = 120 hours—minimum hours to graduate.
· A typical undergraduate class is 3 credit hours—some classes could be more or less—meaning you should aim for 5-6 classes per semester.
What classes should I take?
If you have pre-registered for a CSD Learning Community (LC), great! You can skip to the next section “I have already enrolled in an LC.”
If you have not signed up for an LC, we strongly recommend you join one now because:
1. The majority of the classes have been chosen for you, making scheduling much, much easier.
2. All LC classes fulfill degree requirements.
3. You are guaranteed a seat in all LC classes. (Non-LC classes may already be full because seniors/juniors/sophomores have higher registration priority.)
4. You will be in LC classes with fellow CSD students, meaning you will be able to support each other academically, and make friends!

I have already enrolled in an LC. What’s next?
Once you are in an LC, you already have 4 classes for 11 credit hours. That means you will choose 1 or 2 more classes to reach the targeted 15 hours.
1. Math preparation : Some upper-level classes require math placement level 2 (PL2). If your math placement level is DV or PL1, we encourage you to start math early:

a. If your placement is DV , take MATH D005 .
b. If your placement is PL1 , take MATH 1200 .
c. You may take the math placement test again to improve your placement. A total of 3 attempts are allowed: https://www.ohio.edu/cas/math/placement
d. If your placement is PL2 or PL3, you may take statistics—MATH 2500 or PSY 2110—but there is no rush to take it in your first semester. Choose PSY 2110 if you are interested in pursuing a Psychology minor.

2. The following courses do not have prerequisites, meaning you can take them in your first semester:
a. Fine Arts (2FA) class for General Education
b. CSD 1130 (Intro to Deaf Community)
c. CSD 4900 (Audiology in Health Care)
d. Foreign language—only if you wish to choose Language Option 2 (see below, CSD degree requirements, for Language options)
e. BIOS 1030 (Human Biology)
f. PSC 1051 (Color, Light, & Sound)
g. EDSP 2710 (Intro to Special Education)
h. EDEC 1600 (Intro to Child Development)
i. ANTH 1010 (Intro to Cultural Anthropology)
j. PSY 1010 (General Psychology)
k. Interprofessional Education (IPE) such as IHS 2112, IHS 2220, and IHS 3250. However, we do not recommend taking IPE in the first semester—you may want to learn about your own profession first before taking IPE.

3. You may also take any other courses in the following list of CSD degree requirements—if you have already fulfilled the prerequisites.
4. Some students want to pursue a minor, certificate, or another major in addition to the CSD major. If you want to do that, you may also search for courses that fulfill those minor, certificate, or major requirements.

5. Finally, you can always take a “free elective” to learn something different or just for fun (like a recreation “REC” class). Even though they may not be required by a degree program, any course you take will count towards the minimum 120 hours required by OU.
