CSD Major (BS5327) Program Change 2019
[Last
updated April 8, 2019]
Changes
have been made to the CSD major curriculum in spring 2019. The purpose of
this page is to inform you what the changes are, how the changes may impact
your degree requirements, and where to get help if you have questions.
Three
group advising sessions were offered in March to explain these changes.
Students attending these sessions asked many good questions. Based on the
feedback, more information has been added to this page. If you missed group
advising, please do your part by reading this page carefully before
contacting your advisors for questions.
What are the changes?
- CSD 4410 (Pre-Profession
Service II) will no longer be required or offered, effective (retroactively) fall 2017-18
.
- MATH 1300 (Pre-Calculus)
will no longer be required, effective fall 2019-20.
- PSC 1051 (Color, Light,
and Sound) will be added as an additional option for the Physical
Sciences requirement, effective fall 2019-20.
Why are these changes being made?
These
changes are made to enhance the focus of the CSD major and allow more flexibility
in course choices.
How will these changes affect me?
- CSD 4410 will no longer be
offered:
- If you are on catalog
year 2017-18 or 2018-19 and have already taken CSD 4410, then CSD 4410
will count toward CSD Advanced Courses and General Education Tier III.
- If you are on catalog
year 2017-18 or 2018-19 but have not taken CSD 4410, then you will take
a different Tier III course. The content covered in CSD 4410 will be
integrated into other CSD courses and workshops.
- What class should I take for General Education Tier III?
Examples of Tier III courses offered in
Fall 2019-20 (with minimal prerequisites):
- AAS
3691 US Constitution Law: Pre-Civil Rights Movements (Jr or Sr
)
- EDCS
4001 Democracy, Diversity and Education (One course in Tier II Social
Sciences & Sr
)
- (Online)
IHS 4430 Working on an Interprofessional
Healthcare Team (Major in CHSP & Sr
)
- (Online)
IHS 4447 Critical Thinking and Reasoning in Clinical Problem Solving
(Sr)
- MDIA
4176 Technology, Communication, and Culture ( Sr
)
- (Online)
T3 4071 The Literacy Crisis: Origins and Effects
- T3
4104 God and Science in the Western World ( Sr
)
- T3
4710 Sport Aesthetics ( Sr
)
- (Online)
T3 4725 Women and Leadership: Roles and Responsibilities (PSY 1010 or
SOC 1000 & Sr
)
- How will I obtain observation hours?
- How will I obtain graduate school preparation information?
- Starting
next year, we will be holding periodic meetings during Fall
and Spring semesters about this topic. We will
strongly encourage all students, especially freshman and sophomores,
to attend, because it will be during these meetings that you will get
important info about grad school preparation--what you should be doing starting
freshman year and beyond to make yourself competitive and some about
the nuts and bolts about the application process.
- MATH 1300 and PSC 1051:
The removal of MATH 1300 and addition of PSC 1051 will not affect you
unless you choose to switch to catalog year 2019-20. (The University
allows students the option of switching to a new catalog year.) If you
choose to switch to catalog year 2019-20:
- You do not need to take
MATH 1300 anymore.
- You can take PSC 1051 to
fulfill the Physical Sciences requirement.
Should I switch to catalog year 2019-20?
- If you have already taken
MATH 1300 and a Physical Sciences course (PHYS 2001, CHEM 1210, or CHEM
1510), then making the switch does NOT make sense because you have
fulfilled both degree requirements in your current catalog year.
- If you have not taken these
two courses, then making the switch may make sense because you will have
one fewer class to take and one more choice for the Physical Sciences
requirement.
If I want to switch to catalog year 2019-20,
when and how should I do it?
In fall
semester 2019 (when the 2019-20 catalog takes effect), you will be able to
request the switch by visiting the CHSP Student Services Office. You will not
be able to make the switch before fall 2019.
Projected course offerings that you should
know
The
following CSD courses will be offered only once
during academic year 2019-20:
- CSD 2500 (Speech Science):
Spring only.
- CSD 3100 (Language
Development): Fall only.
- CSD 3410 (Pre-Professional
Service I): Spring only.
Summer
2019:
- PSC 1051 (Color, Light,
& Sound): A choice for the Physical Sciences requirement.
Where can I get help if I have questions?
- Three group advising
sessions were offered in March to explain these changes. If you still
have questions after reading this page, you may contact your academic
advisor for additional help.
- If you have difficulties
connecting with your advisor, please contact Dr. Chao-Yang Lee, CSD’s
Coordinator of Undergraduate Education, by email LEEC1@ohio.edu
