Multiple scholarships are available for undergraduate students majoring or minoring in Physics & Astronomy.
The University’s central office administers scholarships for (usually) incoming first-year students. Those university scholarships can be renewed in subsequent years, but remain administered by the University's central office. Those scholarships are:
- The Darrell Otto Huwe Scholarship,
- The C. Paul and Beth K. Stocker Scholarship,
- The James T. Shipman Physics Scholarship, and
- The Abhishek Singh Scholarship.
The Department administers additional scholarships for (usually) continuing students. Those departmental scholarships can be renewed, but remain administered by the department. Those scholarships are:
- The John E. Edwards Fellowship Endowment,
- The Lela A. Ewers Science Scholarship,
- The Robert P. Gecsy Physics Scholarship, and
- The Folden B. Stumpf and Margaret D. Stumpf Scholarship.
The department's most successful students receive university and departmental awards simultaneously (after their first year).
Application and Selection for Departmental Scholarships
The scholarship coordinator for the department is Dr. Roche ( rochej@ohio.edu ).
Selection is based on academic performance at Ohio University and/or documented needs. Over the past few years, the average GPA of students receiving departmental scholarships has been 3.5. Needs need to be documented through a FAFSA application. Departmental scholarship awards range from a few hundred dollars to full tuition.
The application deadline for the departmental scholarship is February 15. Dr. Roche is in the process of developing new application guidelines; they will be announced by December 1, 2025.
The application deadline for university-administered scholarships is February 1; consult the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships webpage.
The Impact of Scholarships for Students
Students’ testimony on the impact of the scholarship they receive:
Thanks to the John E. Edwards OU Scholarship, I will have a great deal of financial burden lifted off my back for my last year of undergrad. I will be receiving significantly less money from grants and this scholarship will help make up the difference. I am incredibly thankful to this fund for taking the financial stress out of my remaining time here at Ohio University.
I appreciate being selected for this award. This gift allows me to focus my attention on my studies and my work at Edwards Lab. OU has been a great experience so far, and I’m looking forward to my internship with the Physics Department this summer!
The John E. Edwards Scholarship has made it possible for me to continue my education at Ohio University without the worry of expenses. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity this scholarship has provided.
