Optometry School Prerequisites
Optometry schools require students to take natural sciences classes, but the exact requirements vary by school. Certain courses are required for all schools, including:
- Two semesters of Biology, with labs
- Two semesters of General Chemistry, with labs
- Two semesters of General Physics, with labs
- College English
- College Math
Other courses commonly required by schools include calculus, statistics, psychology, anatomy, physiology, microbiology, organic chemistry, or biochemistry. A list of school prerequisites can be found via the Optometry Centralized Application Service (OptomCAS). It is wise to contact schools directly to confirm their requirements. Students also will need to complete the Optometry Admissions Test (OAT) before applying.
Student Involvement
You will find many activities on campus that interest you. There will be many demands on your time with classes, shadowing experiences, and student activities. Many ?pre-opt? students choose to join the Pre-Optometry Club. Campus involvement will enrich your undergraduate experience. Take care to manage your time effectively.
Clinical Experience
Pre-Optometry students also should obtain clinical experience through shadowing, volunteering or employment. You will benefit from a firsthand view of your prospective career, and many optometry schools will require this experience. For example, the Ohio State University College of Optometry requires applicants to have obtained at least 10 hours of clinical observation, including at least two different practice settings.
