CHSP's August 2024 DEI Spotlight:  What's in a Name?

Welcome back!  For our first DEI Spotlight, we are going to focus on Understanding Proper Pronunciation of Names and Mental Health.

Name pronunciation is incredibly important; when someone gets it wrong, it can be more harmful than many realize. Many people have had to shorten their names, solely for the ease of others, rather than for personal preference.  As we start a new semester at OHIO, the DEI Committee wanted to spotlight this very important issue.

Beginning college is an exciting time, but it’s also a time of greater independence and responsibility. This is true whether you are an incoming freshman or a returning student.  The DEI hopes to offer some tips and support for your mental health for this Fall semester.

Why is Mental Health Awareness important to you?

Results are always anonymous

  • People struggle and they should know it is ok to ask for help when needed.
  • Mental Health has taken innocent lives and continues to take the lives of many young individuals.
  • It is important to me because many people in my family have struggled with their mental health. Having people learn more about it and normalizing it can help so many people, like my family, get the help that they need.
  • Creates a safe space to find support and feel welcomed
  • It’s important to me because I have depression.
  • If a student or faculty member is not mentally healthy then it is difficult for them to complete the tasks needed to be successful in their positions.
  • It helps so many people realize that nothing is wrong with them and that what they're experiencing can be managed. It's good to know people are here to help.
  • It is extremely important because there are so many people who struggle daily to communicate what they are thinking and feeling. So many people are likely to say nothing due to the fear of stigma against the concept of mental health. Being called crazy, extreme or dramatic is more common than it should be. So it is important to me to show support to people so they feel comfortable opening up and not hiding the struggles they are encountering.
  • As someone struggling with anxiety it helps me know I am not the only one.
  • It helps me to be empathetic/compassionate to my students and colleagues when they are going through difficulties.
  • I have struggled with depression and anxiety for most of my life. It is important that we raise awareness so that others can learn to develop skills to manage their symptoms and begin to lead a happier life.
  • Making others more aware and educated about mental health helps to break the stigma. It also helps to make those who suffer from mental illness feel more seen and respected.
  • Mental health is no different than any other form of health. All areas are value and need to be assisted correctly and understand.
  • Because anyone can be going through anything, and the little things matter in life.
  • It’s not something that is always understood or even visible. It’s a lot more than just depression and anxiety and not everyone know a that. Making sure people are educated in mental health and it’s causes, especially to the individual, can greatly impact a relationship you have with another person and you’re own ability to connect with others.
  • Mental Health Awareness is important because it allows people to live a safe and happy life.
