What makes Honors Tutorial Different?
Honors Tutorial students develop individualized coursework with the Director of Studies in the School of Art + Design, which typically include introductory and advanced studio courses, introductory and advanced art history, internships, professional practice, and collateral studies with the School of Art + Design, College of Fine Arts, and the University. Studio Art
The Honors Tutorial program balances commitment to breadth and rigor with an opportunity for self-disciplined and highly motivated students to creatively explore fundamental and cutting-edge issues.
Individual curriculums reflect intensive practical training, scholarly research in art history, critical theory and relevant research fields, opportunities for collaboration, and professional experience. The program’s mission is to train highly skilled artists with a broad understanding of contemporary art.
You'll participate in tutorial courses, as well as language, collateral studies and upper-division art history classes. You’ll have a wealth of opportunities for intensive study with the art historians in the School of Art + Design. This enables you to acquire the full range of skills necessary to continue into graduate study and to achieve success working in the field.
Art History
The Honors Tutorial program in Art History balances a commitment to breadth and rigor with an opportunity for self-disciplined and highly motivated students to explore fundamental and cutting-edge issues creatively.
It is a four-year program during which time students are expected to take a tutorial course each term, along with language, collateral studies and upper-division art history courses. This enables students to acquire the full range of skills necessary to successfully continue in graduate study. Students will have excellent opportunities for intensive study with the art historians in the School of Art + Design.
Admission Process
Applicants are selected on the basis of superior academic ability and the potential for self-motivated study and research. Submit your portfolio with your application, and make sure you meet the following requirements:
- A high school class rank in the upper 10%
- High scores on standardized tests (students typically average 30 ACT or SAT equivalent)
- An on-campus interview with the Director of Studies in Studio Art
- A portfolio with at least 10 images that document your best work (audio/video is accepted)

Art + Design Honors College Faculty
