Senior Spotlight - Matt Henry

Matt Henry is graduating this semester from the Patton College of Education with a Bachelor of Science in Middle Childhood Education . An Air Force veteran who financed much of his education with the support of the GI Bill, Henry is completing his professional internship in a ninth-grade classroom at Unioto High School this fall. He serves in the Air Force Reserves and will deploy in March before launching his teaching career.

Why did you choose Ohio University Chillicothe?

I wanted to finish my schooling closer to home. When I was tasked with my second deployment, I wanted my girlfriend at the time (now wife) to be closer to my family and support systems, so we moved to Ross County. Upon my return from that deployment, I was able to complete my education at Ohio University Chillicothe.

What was your ah-ha moment at Ohio University—that point where you said to yourself, “I’ve got this!”?

I think having the opportunity to present some of my works at various conferences and panels showed me that I was doing more than just filling a seat in class. ( Read about Henry's presentation at the Mazza Museum at the University of Findlay).

How has your OHIO education prepared you for a career in education?

The placements and internship have done wonders for showing my ability to teach. I was very concerned that my interest in the subjects did not equal my ability to teach it, but my various placements and internships proved that to be incorrect, thankfully.

What was your most memorable class?

There were so many that were memorable, but my number one slot may go to my Ohio History class. Tt was nice to dive into local history for once.

Who were your favorite professors and how did they make an impact on your life?

Karen Corcoran– Personally paved the path for my graduation with her advising, I would have not graduated if not for her.

Jeanie Dalton– Planted the seed that would grow into what is now fully grown passion for education.

Kevin Cordi– Challenged me in ways that I never had been before and personally picked me to display my talents. My perception of what language arts is has been forever altered for the good.

Deb Nickels– Gave my writing the structure it needed which made me a significantly better writer, as well as being incredibly fun and unforgettable.

John O’Keefe– Reconfirmed my interest in history and showed that there is always more to learn.

What was the hardest hill you had to climb at OHIO? And how did you overcome challenges or obstacles in your path?

I think the biggest challenge has been meeting the time requirements demanded for college and the education program while working full-time.

What are your favorite OHIO Chillicothe memories?

I have a collection of good times and memories during different classes. I was not at the campus outside of class time, so my best memories are from class.
