This investigative journalism award, made possible by a generous gift from Ursula and Dr. Gilbert Farfel to the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University, recognizes major substantive reporting, by a journalist or team of journalists, that covers stories intelligently and completely and that raises public consciousness.
"Investigative journalists do an important job, bringing to light things that we wouldn't know." says Ursula Farfel. "I admire their courage and tenacity."
Ideally, the story or series will have exposed major issues or problems such as improprieties or injustices, mismanagement, and/or corruption. It should have provoked the public to recognize a major wrong and raised public awareness of the issue.
Open to any journalist for investigative work produced for any news media organization. Work associated with college media outlets is not eligible.
Since 2003, Farfel Prize winners have come to Ohio University to talk with students, faculty and the community about their award-winning stories.
The Ursula and Gilbert Farfel Prize for Excellence in National/International Investigative Reporting is one of more than a dozen Scripps Howard Awards presented annually by the Scripps Howard Foundation.
