The most common squirrel in Ohio, adaptable to various habitats including forests, suburban, and urban areas. They are known for their grayish fur, white belly, and bushy tail.

Eastern Gray Squirrel on a tree limb

Black squirrels in Ohio are a melanistic color variation of the eastern gray squirrel, not a separate species. They are becoming more common in certain parts of the state, particularly Northeast Ohio, including Kent and Greater Cleveland. This increased visibility is not due to a species change but rather to a combination of factors including their ability to retain heat in colder climates, potential camouflage advantages, and a shift in habitat preferences.

Found in the woodlots of western Ohio, they prefer habitats with mature trees for food and shelter.

Eastern Fox Squirrel

While not actually flying, they glide between trees using a membrane between their limbs. They are nocturnal and most active at night.
