We have several Summer STEM Events planned and others will likely be scheduled as summer approached, here is what we have scheduled so far:
- Summer STEM Days at the four county libraries in the DOE area, (Pike, Jackson, Ross, and Scioto)
- Field trips for area schools here at the Ridges and at local schools
- Local, statewide, and international STEM events that we have been invited to participate in

Activity Descriptions
Each session is designed for approximately 25 participants in upper elementary and middle school.
Hex Bugs
Participants will use the engineering design process to build a Lego Maze for their hexbug to travel through. Participants will keep their hexbug to take home!
Foldscopes
Participants will learn about microbes and how to use a foldscope microscope and bug boxes. Participants will keep their foldscope or bug box to take home!
Arduino
Participants will learn how to build a lightbulb circuit and write code to make their lightbulb blink. Participants will get an Arduino sticker to take home!
Renewable Energy
Participants will learn about renewable energy (specifically geothermal energy) through making color-changing playdough.
Participants will get to keep their color-changing playdough!
Field Trips
- May 1st: (rain date May 8), Ridges/OMC STEAM field, The Plains Intermediate, 6th grade (150 kids), multiple stations
- May 9th: Ridges/OMC STEAM field, Warren Elementary, 3rd grade (140 kids), multiple stations
- May 13-14th: BioBlitz at Athens High School, pond study
STEM events we are invited to participate in:
- May 14: Ohio EPA Environmental Education Fair in Zanesville
- May 15th: International Science and Engineering Fair held in Columbus this year, we will share a STEM activity focused on elements of “design thinking” through legos,
- Summer Manufacturing Camp in Jackson, Ohio typically scheduled last week in May (tentatively May 29 – 30), likely a programming activity
- June 11th: Pike County (CTC) Curiosity in STEAM Summer Camp event, we will share an aquatic biology activity
