Overload Contract Policy

Each CoB Department/School should monitor faculty overload teaching assignments to ensure compliance with College and University standards.

Total Overload Compensation

For monitoring purposes, all contracts awarded to a CoB faculty member by any Ohio University department/office must be approved by that faculty member’s Home Department and Dean. The total value of all overload contracts for an individual faculty member (teaching and non-teaching combined) cannot exceed 25% of that persons salary during a single academic year (excluding summer and intercession). Exceptions to this policy may be granted under special circumstances with the approval of the Home Department, Dean and Provost.

Athens Campus Overloads

The general University policy is that Athens campus faculty should not be doing overloads to support programs for students enrolled on the Athens campus during Fall and Spring on a regular basis. For the CoB, this means the Athens undergraduate program and the on-campus MBA and MSA. The CoB operating budget is supposed to support these programs so they should be staffed on load as much as possible. Regional campus and off-campus programs, online courses, and programs involving external students coming to Athens, can be staffed using overload.

The general principle governing overload for administrators is that those with administrative assignments should not engage in overload that would interfere with their normal duties as follows:

  • Full-time administrators with no teaching responsibility (Dean/Associate Dean level) should not do any overloads, including summer, intercession and regional.
  • Part-time administrators (Program Directors, Department Chairs/School Directors, etc) should typically not do any overloads during the academic year (excluding summer and intercession).
  • Administrative staff can only do overload teaching assignments outside normal working hours (unless the hours are made up) and are limited to a maximum of two overloads annually (including summer and intercession).

Maximum Number of Overload Courses

The policy for the College of Business is that overloads should not interfere with the ability of a faculty member to meet their normal expectations for teaching, research and service during the academic year (summer and intercession teaching do not fall under this policy). Overloads that add courses to faculty with course releases should generally not occur and probationary faculty with summer research support should normally not take on overload courses during the summer.

Availability of Opportunities

In general, all faculty with the appropriate qualifications based the discipline/specialty needs of the overload assignment should have an opportunity to apply for overloads. Successful past teaching performance in the program or in general is expected in order to be considered for an overload.

Department Chairs/School Directors should be notified of all overload contracts taken by their faculty so that the potential impact of the overload on a faculty member’s other duties can be assessed and so that the distributions of overloads across the faculty can be considered when making an overload assignment.

Approval of Exceptions

Additional overloads should be done rarely on an exception basis and must be approved and documented by the department chair in consultation with the Executive Team of the College.
