PETE 2000 - Cultural Perspectives and Physical Activity


This course examines the interrelationship between culture and physical activity and how that interrelationship reinforces cultural values and/or at times challenges physical activity participation. Students recognize the role and meaning of physical activity in their lives and the wider community.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to define working definitions of culture.
  • Students will be able to explain how various cultures view physical activity.
  • Students will be able to explain how the fitness movement of the 21st century differs from previous fitness movements throughout history.
  • Students will be able to describe how various cultural factors influence participation in physical activity: age (perceived in different cultures), religion, ethnicity/race, gender, dress code, and media.
  • Students will be able to apply strategies and techniques to monitor, maintain, and improve their life.
