IHS 2215 - Medical Humanities: Global Health and Literature


This course explores global concepts and determinants of health through the reading of literary works, critical reviews and other representations of health issues in popular culture. Disease and illness is examined not only objectively and scientifically but also humanistically. This class links the organic problems addressed by health care providers and the human experience.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Articulate comparisons between different writers approaches to global health topics.
  • Demonstrate understanding of mobility and health need and healthcare for mobile communities.
  • Describe the role of gender in health and access to healthcare globally.
  • Describe the role of humanities in influencing beliefs and perceptions surrounding global health .
  • Describe “narrative” and discuss its scope and limitations to explore ethical issues in relation to cultural differences in health and health care.
  • Examine how literary forms structure and give meanings to crucial life questions about health.
  • To describe four orientations of the medical literary curriculum: practitioner and patient; practitioner and self; practitioner and colleagues; practitioner and society.
