ART 2950 - Introduction to Art Therapy
This course utilizes an interactive lecture and experiential approach to build an understanding of the history, theories, principles, and practices of contemporary art therapy. Students explore how psychology and psychotherapy intersect with the creative process. Using both art produced from classwork as well as from other sources, students learn and practice how to explore artwork non-judgmentally in a manner that promotes an increase of self-awareness, health and well-being, and the concrete experience of change. Additionally, students study the range and uses of art therapy in a variety of community as well as clinical settings.

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to demonstrate the ability to look at artwork through a set of formal objective criteria, using a non-judgmental, process centered approach.
- Students will be able to identify a variety of applications for art therapy for various ages and populations within the clinical/ community spectrum.
- Students will be able to articulate an understanding of parallel histories and developments between psychology and art therapy and how psychological frameworks contribute to the practice of art therapy.
- Students will be able to engage in the creative process through the lens of art therapy.
- Students will be able to express themselves using a variety of traditional art media skill sets as well as non-traditional media used in art therapy.
- Students will be able to utilize journaling and recording responses to making art for an intensified process of self-reflection.
