ECEE 3701 - Diversity and Awareness in Early Childhood and Elementary Education
This course focuses on increasing awareness, sensitivity, and understanding of children and families from diverse racial, ethnic, linguistic, religious, and family backgrounds. Students gain an understanding of structural racism and its impact on educational systems. Instructional frameworks such as culturally relevant pedagogy and equity pedagogy are explored. Implicit bias and anti-bias educational practices are examined. Students discuss the role of advocacy related to supporting children and the education profession.
Requisites: (Teacher Candidacy and admission to PK Internship) or (Child Development major) or (concurrent with ECEE 2001)
Credit Hours: 3
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.

- Students will be able to define intersectionality and describe its role in understanding diverse student populations.
- Students will be able to plan and implement instruction that utilizes culturally relevant and equity-focused pedagogy.
- Students will be able to identify instructional materials that celebrate diversity in PK-5 classrooms.
- Students will be able to reflect upon how critical dispositions are essential in educating children in a multicultural world.
