OCOM 8070 - Palliative Care


This one- or two-week (preceptor and CORE site dependent) required course for 3rd or 4th year medical students is designed to expand their knowledge of pain and palliative care. Dealing with life-threatening illnesses requires complex interdisciplinary care to maximize quality of life. This course will expose students to the physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of those near the end of life in multiple venues (hospital, office, home and/or residential care).

Course Outcomes
  • The purpose of the Palliative Care rotation is to expand the student’s knowledge base on pain and palliative care. Those dealing with life-threatening illnesses often require complex, interdisciplinary care to maximize their quality of life.
  • A set of learning objectives is provided to guide the student’s learning activities and to serve as a baseline for assessment of the student’s knowledge, skills, and professional behavior.
  • During the Palliative Care Rotation, students are expected to develop their competencies in many basic clinical skills and professional behaviors related to caring for the dying patient and his/her family members.
