DANC 2550 - Dance Cultures of the World I


This course facilitates the critical examination of dance (and accompanying music) in varied cultural worldwide frameworks. Dances from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America are examined on film, in live performances, through readings, and in studio experiences. Students learn to reflect on cultural differences and how those impact traditional and contemporary dance practices.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to employ the principles, terminology, and methods of cultural dance study.
  • Students will be able to analyze and interpret cultural dance forms.
  • Students will be able to explain the impact of cultural values and historical factors in a selection of global dance examples.
  • Students will be able to articulate insights about their own cultural values and biases, and describe the difference between emic and etic approaches to comparative dance study.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the complexity of varied cultural dance traditions, and how dance culture is a microcosm of the total culture (history, values, communication styles, beliefs and practices, world view).
  • Students will be able to ask complex questions of dance cultures, interpret intercultural experience from an empathetic perspective, and explain multiple perspectives on acquiring dance knowledge.
