INST 1010 - Understanding the World


Introduction to international studies and global affairs, focused on key political, economic, and social forces and structures that shape the contemporary global order.

Learning Outcomes:  
  • Students will be able to identify and articulate (in writing and orally) their own values with regards to the major global forces that shape their lives, and evaluate how those values influence their interactions and relationships with others.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate (in writing) an understanding of how the processes and patterns of globalization shape their lives around a range of issues, using theories and perspectives drawn from the course content.
  • Students will be able to develop an awareness of and ability to compare and contrast the experiences of people and communities outside their own personal experiences.
  • Students will be able to explore and articulate the individual and collective responsibilities that link people and communities within the global system, and generate analytic, creative, and practical approaches and solutions to important global issues.
