REC 1080 - Fundamentals of Rock Climbing


Introduces students to the knowledge and skills needed to safely and enjoyably participate in the sport of rock climbing. Students gain hands-on experience as they master relevant climbing knots, practice basic climbing movement, learn proper belaying technique, and apply the fundamentals of setting up top rope anchors. As students engage in the sport of rock climbing, they learn how to evaluate key environmental considerations to minimize impacts while climbing.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to identify and describe equipment, clothing, and accessories needed to have a safe and enjoyable rock-climbing experience.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a mastery of basic climbing knots and the appropriate applications for those knots.
  • Students will be able to apply proper belaying technique when using different climbing belay devices.
  • Students will be able to evaluate and distinguish between subjective and objective climbing hazards.
  • Students will be able to apply principles of safety and risk management in minimizing accident potential on future rock-climbing experiences.
  • Students will be able to utilize proper rock-climbing movement technique while climbing.
  • Students will be able to connect relevant experience and academic knowledge as they apply the principles used to build and set-up a top-rope anchor in an outdoor field setting.
  • Students will be able to make connections across disciplines as they evaluate key environmental considerations to minimize the impacts that rock climbing can have on the natural world.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a sense of self by reflecting on lessons learned through multiple field experiences designed to apply climbing knowledge and skills in a field setting.
  • Students will be able to meaningfully communicate learning in appropriate formats and language.
