PBIO 2180 - Introduction to Biological Research and Writing
The course provides an introduction to writing in the biological sciences including how to read scientific literature, critically evaluate figures and conclusions, synthesize information from various sources, and organize and communicate ideas.
Requisites: BIOS 1700 or PBIO 1140

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to find literature on scientific topics and demonstrate an understanding of the context and purpose for the writing and its intended effect on the audience.
- Students will be able to explain the fundamentals of how research is performed.
- Students will be able to synthesize scientific information from a variety of sources to illustrate mastery of the subject.
- Students will be able to incorporate formal and informal conventions and stylistic choices to tailor writings for different audiences and venues.
- Students will be able to use source texts and self and peer critique to help extend, develop, define and shape their ideas.
- Students will be able to apply appropriate syntax and mechanics to effectively communicate ideas to varied audiences.
