ART 2120 - Creative Coding for Artists I


This is an introductory course where students learn histories, principles, and practices of creative coding for artists with an emphasis on technologies, methodologies, and explorations of creating art-based digital assemblies and artistic compositions and their presentations in the physical space. Students participate in critique and critical analysis of digital artwork utilizing an understanding of the histories and possibilities of Art + Technology to reach a wider audience within virtual or physical spaces. Students explore practical experiences and abilities to utilize code and different technologies working in static or interactive 2D, 3D, and time-based mediums.

Requisites: One course from ART 1200, ART 1210, ART 1220 or ART 1230; OR One VICO or MDIA 2000-level studio course; OR two courses from MDIA 1250, MDIA 1300, MDIA 1350, MDIA 1450
Credit Hours: 4
Repeat/Retake Information: May be retaken two times excluding withdrawals, but only last course taken counts.
Lecture/Lab Hours: 2.0 lecture, 4.0 studio

Learning Outcomes:
  • Students will be able to create computer-generated static, animated, and interactive physical and digital artworks and experiences.
  • Students will be able to define the fundamentals of creative coding and computer programming for artists.
  • Students will be able to actively engage in the critique and discussion regarding internet, electronic, digital, and computer-generated artworks.
  • Students will be able to express a unique creative voice and a personal approach to using visual arts programming and interactive art as an expressive tool.
  • Students will be able to contextualize the histories and possibilities of Art + Technology to reach a wider audience.
  • Students will be able to utilize practical experiences and abilities to code and use different technologies working in static or interactive 2d, 3d, and time-based mediums (4d).
