ANTH 5020 - Media Anthropology
This course introduces media anthropology as a subfield within cultural anthropology and explores theoretical and ethnographic issues relevant to the study of media-related practices in the social lives of living communities.

Learning Outcomes:
- Students will be able to describe major theory and methods in media anthropology.
- Students will be able to assess the ethics of media representation and the politics of media production and consumption in relation to cross-cultural research and communication.
- Students will be able to demonstrate self-reflexivity about their biases and expectations in addressing media representation with special attention to questions of positionality and identity markers such as race, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and ability.
- Students will be able to investigate complex questions of media and culture in a rigorous and systematic manner, and to articulate answers to these questions that reflect a sensitivity to cultural difference.
- Students will be able to interpret intercultural experiences associated with media and culture and respond empathetically towards other cultural groups, suspending judgment and valuing diverse perspectives.
- Students will be able to demonstrate, through verbal and non-verbal communications, curiosity and openness regarding the ways in which media influences the construction of meaning, identity, and social relationships within various communities.
- Students will be able to prepare a draft of an article following the conventions and requirements of a targeted academic journal.
