Program Overview
The Southeast Asian Studies Certificate is open to students from any major. The program is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of Southeast Asia, which comprises a vital region that stands at the forefront of dynamic changes in global politics and the world economy. The certificate program critically examines these trends as well as the rich cultures, traditions, and societies of Southeast Asia. The curriculum involves courses from four university colleges and many disciplines and it includes multiple opportunities for study abroad. The interdisciplinary coursework and language skills of the certificate are applicable to a wide variety of professions.
Southeast Asia includes Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Southeast Asia also holds great strategic importance due to burgeoning economic trade with the United States, important sea lanes connecting the Indian and Pacific Oceans, and the region’s extensive ethnic and religious diversity. Indonesia has a larger Muslim population than any other country in the world. Students also have multiple opportunities to study abroad in Southeast Asia.
