Program Overview
The International Business Certificate program consists of fifteen semester hours (five three-credit semester courses), including four required courses and one elective course (described below). This necessitates that students learn the basic issues involved with international business, while maintaining flexibility in adapting the program to the student’s particular area(s) of interest. The courses include coverage of:
- the complex and changing environmental forces that impact international business and how companies can effectively adapt to these forces,
- tools for assessing the attractiveness of potential international markets as well as the alternatives for entering and expanding within these markets,
- differences in cultures and their impact on the leadership and management practices that will promote success in international business, and
- practical, hands-on experiential exercises and activities that are designed to internalize the capabilities and mindset required for success in international business.
The International Business Certificate program admits both students from within the College of Business (COB) and students from outside the COB.
Admissions Information
Freshman Admission
Admission to the certificate program is expected to be competitive. Admission cannot be guaranteed to all students meeting the admission criteria. The International Business Certificate program admits students up to its enrollment ceiling, and students judged to have the highest probability of success will be admitted. Members of groups historically underrepresented in business will receive special consideration. Criteria for admission into the International Business Certificate program include:
- Submission to the Management Department office of a completed application form;
- Submission to the Management Department office of a copy of the applicant’s most recent DARS report;
- Submission to the Management Department office of the applicant’s resume, demonstrating the characteristics that support the student’s interest in international business. For example, an above-average GPA, strong work ethic, previous international business experience or courses involving international or cross-cultural topics, prior leadership positions, etc.; and
- Completion by the applicant of a panel interview, if requested, with international business faculty.
Application forms may be picked up from the Management Department office in the College of Business.
Change of Major/Minor/Certificate Policy

Opportunities Upon Graduation
Increased global integration suggests that improved international and intercultural awareness and skills can benefit all participants in the labor force. Even employees of organizations with limited activities across borders will benefit from improved ability to work effectively with customers, suppliers, and partners from other nations, as well as working in an increasingly multicultural workplace. Students completing an International Business Certificate program would thus be able to differentiate themselves from other candidates in a competitive job marketplace through their additional business training, intercultural awareness, and international living and working experience.
