Program Overview
The Sports Nutrition Certificate program offered at Ohio University provides the cumulative education and skills training to equip students to provide sound sports nutrition information to their clients. Students completing the certificate can improve the performance diet in youth, collegiate, military, recreational athletes, and performing artists through sound nutrition education. This certificate will provide undergraduate students interested in pursuing careers as registered dietitian nutritionists, certified athletic trainers, exercise physiologists, certified health education specialists, physician assistants, physicians, nurses, physical therapists, educators, coaches, and others knowledge and sports nutrition-related skill development to enhance their program of study.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program:
- Student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in nutritional assessment and intervention recommendations for a target athlete/active individual population.
- Student will be able to demonstrate proficiency in applying sports nutrition principles to a target athlete population.
Admissions Information
Freshman/First-Year Admission
Students currently enrolled in any program of study at Ohio University qualify for admission. (It is noted, however, that some students in other majors may not have the appropriate preparation in the sciences and will need to take additional courses to complete the program).
Change of Program Policy
No selective or limited admissions requirements.
External Transfer Admission
No requirements beyond University admission requirements.
Opportunities Upon Graduation
This certificate will foster development of knowledge and skills related to nutritional aspects of athletic and physical performance. Upon completion of the certificate, undergraduate students will be better prepared to pursue post-graduate study in sports nutrition or a related area, and have a deeper understanding of nutritional aspects of athletic and physical performance to more competently perform in their career of choice. Overall, this certificate will make students more competitive in the work force.

Core Course Requirement
Complete one of the following:
- EXPH 3010 - Foundations of Exercise Physiology Credit Hours: 3
- EXPH 4140 - Physiology of Exercise Credit Hours: 3
- EXPH 4170 - Clinical Exercise Physiology for Nursing Credit Hours: 3
Core Courses in Nutrition
Complete the following courses, including (NUTR 4900 for 2 hours)
- NUTR 1000 - Introduction to Nutrition Credit Hours: 3
- NUTR 3000 - Nutrient Metabolism Credit Hours: 3
- NUTR 3230 - Fundamentals of Nutrition for Athletic and Physical Performance Credit Hours: 3
- NUTR 4900 - Special Topics in Nutrition Credit Hours: 1 - 15
