Program Overview
Environmental health is a branch of public health that focuses on the relationship between people and the environment. The nationally-accredited environmental health science program focuses on skills to promote health by concentrating on diseases spread through water, food, chemicals, waste, vectors, and other environmental factors. The curriculum offers a solid foundation in physical and biological sciences, plus hands-on experience in the field.
Program Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the program:
- Students will be able to demonstrate professional oral and written communication skills.
- Students will be able to perform methods, techniques, and activities at a professional level.
- Students will be able to collect data and formulate conclusions, strategies and solutions to professional standards.
- Students will be able to describe essential facets of the profession.

Opportunities Upon Graduation
Career opportunities in environmental health are diverse and many. Graduates work in industry, corporations, insurance companies, food establishments, research facilities, and governmental agencies. Many find employment in health care settings, including hospitals, laboratories, or public health departments. Still more options exist in the field of education or with public utilities, natural resource departments, consulting firms, and environmental consulting.
Requirements
University-wide Graduation Requirements
Ohio University requires completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours for conferral of a bachelor’s degree. However, the Environmental Health Science major requires a minimum of 121 hours to complete.
