Program Overview
The Minor in Jazz Studies is intended for any Ohio University undergraduate student who wishes to emphasize the study of jazz in addition to their major area of focus. Students take courses in jazz history, theory, and performance, but also have the opportunity to customize their curriculum through several elective options.

Opportunities Upon Graduation
The study of jazz celebrates an art form that is uniquely American. Foundational knowledge of this music can lead to additional opportunities in a variety of disciplines within the arts, but also in other fields that rely on an understanding of improvisation, American history, and working with others as an “ensemble” to achieve a common creative goal.

Music Theory and Improvisation
Complete the following courses for a total of 3 hours:
- MUS 3770 - Jazz Improvisation I Credit Hours: 1
- MUS 4050 - Jazz Theory I Credit Hours: 2
Music History and Literature
Complete the following course and sub-requirement for a total of 5-6 credit hours:
- MUS 1625 - The History of Jazz Credit Hours: 3
Complete One of the Following:
- MUS 1210 - Introduction to World Music Credit Hours: 3
- MUS 1240 - History of Rock Music I Credit Hours: 3
- MUS 4250 - Music of Africa Credit Hours: 2
Ensembles
Complete 4 hours from the following:
