Program Overview
Business analytics refers to the knowledge, skills and competencies required for the methodical exploration and investigation of business data using predictive, and prescriptive statistical tools to support decision making and to gain insight of business performance. The OHIO College of Business offers an undergraduate major that develops students skills and competencies in business analytics and provides them with hands on experience of statistical tools used in the business environment using data provided by industry partners.
Business Analytics comprise of two equally important domains:
- Information Management: the creation, collection, organization, processing, analysis and reporting of data within the context of business processes in the enterprise using database software and visualization tools.
- Statistical methods, tools and techniques: the quantitative understanding of statistical methods, techniques, and tools to analyze the data and contextualize it within the business to gain competitive insight.
Admissions Information
Freshman/First-Year Admission
No requirements beyond University admission requirements and admission to the College of Business.
Change of Program Policy
The Business Analytics Co-Major is available to any student in the College of Business.
External Transfer Admission
No requirements beyond University admission requirements and the requirements to successfully transfer into the College of Business.
Opportunities Upon Graduation
Data is a critical organizational resource. The need for capable business professionals with solid quantitative and analytical skills to investigate data using sophisticated statistical tools and techniques is imperative. Data analytics provides an in-demand skillset for any business professional and there are a number of emerging jobs focused on data analysis in most organizations.
Requirements
University-wide Graduation Requirements
Ohio University requires completion of a minimum of 120 semester hours for conferral of a bachelor’s degree. However, the Business Analytics co-major requires completion of a minimum of 135 hours. Business Analytics Co-Major Requirement
You must complete the 15 hours required for the business analytics co-major in conjuction with the requirements for one of the other BBA majors, which include accounting, business economics, entrepreneuship, finance, international business, management and strategic leadership, management information systems, and marketing or in conjuction with the requirements for the Bachelor of Sport Management major.
Required Courses
Complete the following four courses:
- MIS 2800 - Business Intelligence and Information Management Credit Hours: 3
- MIS 4580 - Advanced Business Intelligence Credit Hours: 3
- QBA 3720 - Predictive Analytics Credit Hours: 3
- QBA 4720 - Prescriptive Analytics Credit Hours: 3
Elective Course
Complete one of the following courses:
- ACCT 4700 - Data Analytics for Accounting Credit Hours: 3
- FIN 4700 - Data Analytics for Finance Credit Hours: 3
- MIS 3200 - Systems Development Credit Hours: 3
- MKT 4700 - Marketplace Analytics Credit Hours: 3
- SASM 4200 - Sport Analytics Credit Hours: 3
