Using SpeedGrader in Canvas

Description

The SpeedGrader tool in Canvas allows graders to easily evaluate individual and group assignments. SpeedGrader allows instructors to view and grade student assignment submissions in one place using points, percentages, or rubrics. Canvas accepts a variety of document formats and even URLs as assignment submissions. Some document assignments can be marked up for feedback directly within the submission. You can also provide feedback to your students with text or media comments.

Environment

Considerations

  • Because of how data is loaded and stored in the web browser, SpeedGrader is generally intended for one instructor role to grade submissions at a time.
  • Instructors cannot delete assignment submissions.
  • If a quiz includes more than 65 total submissions, individual attempts cannot be viewed in SpeedGrader.
  • Submission details are not shown when an assignment is graded anonymously.

Solution

Accessing SpeedGrader

  1. Log in to Canvas at canvas.ohio.edu
  2. Navigate to your desired course
  3. In the course navigation menu, select  Assignments
  4. In the assignment name column in the Gradebook, select the three-dot options icon
  5. Select SpeedGrader

Using SpeedGrader

The left side of the SpeedGrader menu bar includes general settings and options. You can select the gradebook icon to return to the gradebook. The visibility icon will allow you to post or hide grades from students. Settings include sorting options and keyboard shortcuts  to help you navigate quickly in SpeedGrader.

The center of the menu bar includes assignment information such as name and due date. You can view the assignment details by selecting the name of the assignment where you can also download all student submissions  for the assignment. Grading information helps you keep track of your grading progress by displaying the number of assignments that have been graded out of the total, as well as the average score and percentage.

The right side of the menu bar includes the student list for the assignment. SpeedGrader opens the assignment alphabetically by last name and displays the status of each student's submission.

Once you have selected a student, the student's submission displays in the preview window. The SpeedGrader preview window varies depending on the assignment and submission type. For example, a Word document will open and allow you to use mark-up tools on the assignment.

To provide comments on document submissions, you can:

The SpeedGrader sidebar provides all the  submission details such as date and time of the submission, or previous versions if the assignment was resubmitted by the student. You can download submission files by selecting the link, grade assignments, leave comments, reassign assignments, and view submission status.

Outcome: You should now be able to access SpeedGrader and use it to grade assignment submissions.
