Using Canvas Student ePortfolios (Folios)

Description

Canvas offers a free Student ePortfolio tool, sometimes also called Folio, which is an academic portfolio network that allows you to showcase your education and work accomplishments and connect with other professionals. Your Canvas Student ePortfolios profile allows you to organize and display previous educational and professional content. You can upload images, videos (YouTube, Vimeo), PDFs, text documents, and more to your portfolio. You can use projects within your portfolio to further organize your content.

Canvas Student ePortfolios allows you to connect with people and companies you already know, as well as follow companies you are interested in. You can discover and apply for jobs and add specific content to showcase your qualifications. You can also view content posted by other users to discover how they accomplished their work; you can ‘like’ their content and comment or message them for advice.

Instructors may also request that you submit a portfolio project as an assignment.

Solution

Create your Account with Folio

  1. Log into Canvas  on a Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge web browser
  2. Select Account
  3. Select Folio
  4. Select New Project
  5. Enter your Ohio University email address
  6. Create a password
  7. Your password should be separate from your Ohio University account password to ensure that you will have access to your portfolio after you have graduated from the University.
  8. For account type, select if you are an undergraduate or graduate student
  9. Enter your birthday
  10. Review and agree to the terms of service and privacy policy
  11. Select Continue

Please note this will bring you to the project creation page. Select Finish Later to be taken to the main portfolio screen.

Set Up your Profile

Your profile should contain information you wish to be visible to potential connections and employers, including an introduction, your resume, educational, work or volunteer experience, skills, awards, or extracurricular activities. The system will provide you with prompts for the type of information you should include, and you can find additional instructions for configuring your profile in Canvas' Student ePortfolios help page.

Create a Project

Projects are the containers that store the information that makes up your portfolio. They are a wonderful way to highlight work you have completed for your education or career. Project types include research and lab reports, essays, and demonstrations of skills such as design, drawing, and writing. Your instructors may also create an assignment that requires you to submit a project. Once again, the system will provide suggestions for the type of information that should be contained within a project. You can find additional resources for creating projects in Canvas' Student ePortfolios help page.

Considerations:

  • You may upload up to 100 artifacts per project.
  • The option to connect to OneDrive for uploading files does not work with the Ohio University version of OneDrive; it will only connect to a personal OneDrive account. You can still share content from Ohio University’s OneDrive, you just may have to download it first.

Submit a Project Assignment

If your instructor requests that you submit a project as an assignment, visit the  ePortfolio Projects & Canvas Assignments document for step-by-step instructions.

Consideration:

  • The information in your profile is not automatically added to your project. If your instructor requests that you include information that is in your profile within your project, you will need to recreate that information in your project.

Access Folio

  1. Log into Canvas
  2. Select Account
  3. Select Folio

After the initial setup of your account, you should not be prompted for your password when accessing Folio from within Canvas.

Outcome: You should now be able to create your student account, set up your profile, create a project, and submit a project assignment in Canvas Student ePortfolio.
