Austin State University is seeking a Department Chair to provide leadership and management for our eight academic program areas including, Rehabilitation Services, Counseling (Rehabilitation, Community and School), Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Orientation and Mobility, School and Behavioral Psychology, Special Education, Communication Disorders, and Visual Impairment. The chief executive of the department, the department chair, is responsible for the implementation of department, college and university policy, with some teaching responsibilities. The Department: The department has an enrollment of 462 students (243 undergraduate and 219 graduate) and offers 10 different majors. It maintains 5 Centers for instruction, research or service and consistently maintains grant funding of over $3 million. In spring 2004 the department moved into a new state-of-the-art $16.1 million dollar facility that is equipped with outstanding clinic spaces that are used to service the community. The department has approval for a new Ph.D. program in School Psychology that is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2009. The department has also proposed a master's degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education also scheduled to begin fall 2009. Essential Job Functions: Able to provide positive leadership to the department. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge and experience with, research and grants management; college and program accreditation; successful student advising; effective teaching; personnel management procedures, processes in recruiting, hiring and evaluating personnel at the post-secondary level; enrollment management; program promotion; professional collaboration; physical resources management; university program development; and course scheduling. Experience: Demonstrated record of scholarly productivity and effective programmatic leadership including data-driven decision making for program improvement. It is preferred that the successful candidate possess an established record of teaching, research, and service at the level that would meet the tenure requirements. Education: Terminal degree and university level faculty experience in at least one departmental program area. Rank of associate professor or professor preferred.
