From: Rough, Jim [mailto: Jim.Rough at cswb.state.oh.us ] Sent: Tuesday, January 17, 2012 2:38 PM Subject: LT - Federal Policies RE Practice of Mental Health Counseling Hello All, The following documents were brought to my attention at the 2012 American Association of State Counseling Boards. These are important documents for the future of counseling. I urge you to read and understand them. My very short synopsis below is not nuanced or complete. The U. S. Army released Army Directive 2011-09, which says in essence you have to have a CAREP degree and pass the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE) in order to work for them. Link: http://cswmft.oio.gov/pdfs/ArmyDir.pdf DOD has a report on TRCARE providers, which says in essence you have to have a CACREP accredited degree and NCMHCE, but grandparent provisions apply up to 2014. Basically have a license in a state and NCMHCE. Link: http://cswmft.ohio.gov/pdfs/TriCrpt.pdf The Institute of Medicine has a report on what TRICARE should do. IOM is skeptical of all accreditation standards, but recommends CACREP and NCMHCE. Link: http://cswmft.ohio.gov/pdfs/IOMrpt.pdf You should contact ACA or NBCC for further information. I am no expert, but want you to know about these as they portend future Federal standards. If you want to work for the Army or under TRICARE and you do not have a CACREP accredited degree - contact NBCC to take the NCMHCE. Link: http://nbcc.org/Contact It is your profession and you should know this stuff. Jim James R.
