Subject: Writing to Engage Readers: A Research Study

Dr. Bhat, your name was identified on the CACREP website as a contact person at your university. As part of a research project, we are writing to ask that you place the attached letter and link to an online survey - located at the bottom of the letter - on your counselor education listserv for students in your program to complete. If you have another electronic means (other than a listserv) by which you communicate with your students, we ask that you place the attached letter and link on that medium.

We are interested in studying impressions of graduate students in counselor education programs, regarding how often they read articles in journals associated with the American Counseling Association (ACA) and what they believe characterizes an engaging writing style for these articles. We are asking for participation from university counselor education programs that offer one or more master's degrees in counseling and where the doctoral degree in counselor education and supervision is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP; 63 such programs have been identified). One or more of the master's degrees in counseling may be or may not be accredited by CACREP. The study is titled, Writing to Engage Readers. In order for your students to participate in this study, you will need to place the attached letter with link to the online survey on your program's listserv (or other electronic medium) for students to complete.

Once students click on the link - located at the bottom of the attached letter - the survey should take about 15 minutes to complete. The survey does not ask for a name, participation is voluntary, individuals may discontinue at any time without penalty, and it is not anticipated that participating in the study will be associated with greater than minimal risk, so an informed consent form is not being used. As an incentive for participating in the research, email addresses of three participants will be selected to receive a $75.00 Amazon Gift Card Certificate. The three participants selected to receive an Amazon Gift Card Certificate will be contacted by email and asked to provide their name and postal address so that the Amazon Gift Card Certificate can be mailed to them. The study has been reviewed and approved by the Kent State University Institutional Review Board (IRB). If you have questions or concerns regarding this research, you may contact the Principal Investigator, John D. West, Ed.D., or you may contact the IRB at 330-672-2704.

If you agree to place the attached letter and link on your program listserv (or other electronic medium) for students to complete, we would appreciate you sending John West a quick email indicating that this has occurred and indicating the number of students having access to this electronic medium. Obviously, knowing the number of students with access to this electronic medium from participating counselor education programs will allow us to have an idea of the number of possible participants in the study.

Thank you for considering our request.

Respectfully,
