Position Description

About the Position:
The Associate Director of disAbility Resources for Students (DRS) provides operational oversight, management, supervision and campus-wide daily leadership in support of Western’s commitment to students with disabilities engaged in academic and co- and extracurricular activities. The Associate Director reports to the Registrar, who also serves as the Director of DRS. This is a permanent 12-month, full-time position with excellent benefits.

About the College/Department:
disAbility Resources for Students provides equal access for students with disabilities to all curricular and co-curricular opportunities at Western by ensuring that qualified students with disabilities receive reasonable and appropriate accommodations. DRS is committed to an environment and culture of inclusion, equity and diversity in our staff and collaborative programmatic efforts to ensure academic success for students with disabilities. Students with disabilities are deeply established in all areas of co- and extra-curricular activities, athletics and across all academic disciplines including exceptional scholarship. The department strives for excellent retention and graduation of students with disabilities and incorporates efficient use of technology with individualized support and development. DRS collaborates with many university offices including academic departments, the Counseling Center, Equal Opportunity, Dean of Students, Student Health Ce nter, Financial Aid and Admissions in order to advance department, division and university goals. DRS organizationally reports to the Registrar/DRS Director, who in turn reports to the Vice President for Enrollment and Student Services.

Position Responsibilities:

  *   Provide leadership, supervision and management of DRS daily operations
  *   Provide direction and development of DRS staff by ensuring cultural competence and ethical practices are central to service delivery and student advising/counseling
  *   Develop and maintain departmental standards for the independent determination of appropriate and reasonable accommodations and/or services based upon an individual assessment and in collaboration with the student
  *   Provide individualized disability management counseling and advising for students
  *   Develop and coordinate programs/trainings for students, staff, faculty and public to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of accommodations/services according to current research, national standards and internal program assessment
  *   Liaison with university offices and departments to promote disability awareness that includes disability culture, social justice, history and social construct
  *   Coordinate interdepartmental efficiency to support retention and graduation efforts for students with disabilities
  *   Determine and set staff/office standards for excellence in student and faculty service
  *   Manage departmental budget
  *   Develop, modify and update DRS policies and procedures to meet current federal and state compliance requirements
  *   Serve as a campus resource in applicable disability service law, best practices and national trends in academic success for students with disabilities
  *   Ensure the accuracy of DRS records (employment, student, fiscal) in accordance with federal, state and institutional requirements
  *   Ensure operations, programs and services align with the DRS mission statement and program outcomes
  *   Assess and analyze data and complete quarterly and annual reports regarding DRS operations, service population, outcomes progress and fiscal accounting
  *   Assess department standards through examination of best practices for the independent evaluation of medical and psychological documentation provided by potential and enrolled students with disabilities seeking accommodation/service from DRS
  *   Maintain departmental/program website(s), service database software and publications
  *   Provide advice and assistance to faculty and academic leadership to help them better understand the role of DRS and accommodation requirements in order to maximize academic success for students with disabilities


Required Qualifications:

  *   Master’s Degree in Special Education, Disability Studies, Counseling or related field such as social work or student affairs (please address how the degree relates to this work)
  *   Experience working effectively with multi-diverse populations, including students from a wide range of backgrounds and social identities
  *   Supervisory and resource management experience within an institutional structure, including a demonstrated ability to effectively supervise staff and work collaboratively across an organization
  *   Knowledge of applicable disability law, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and demonstrated ability to apply this understanding in a university context
  *   Experience working in disability support services
  *   Experience evaluating medical and psychological documentation and determining appropriate accommodations
  *   Experience in learning outcomes/program outcomes development, implementation and assessment
  *   Excellent writing, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  *   Experience presenting in small and large group environments
  *   Knowledge of human and/or student development theory
  *   Experience managing a budget


Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Experience with adaptive technology
  *   Experience with general office and database software programs
  *   Experience with publication development and maintenance including printed literature and website(s) – with greater emphasis in web design, layout and accessibility
  *   Professional experience in higher education

Salary: $63,151 - $70,168 dependent upon experience
