[Dtwg] Terrapin Nesting Activity 2020

Correction. I stated the "last week of April" for nesting in the Savannah, GA region. The correct week is 19 - 25 April, with the first road mortality recorded on the U.S. Hwy 80 causeway connecting Wilmington and Tybee islands on 23 April. This is 15 days earlier than the first record of 2019 on 8 May.

As per Chantal Audran of the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, they have already cataloged 50 road mortalities on U.S. Hwy 80 since 23 April. This is both unusually early, and an unusually high observance of mortality for the date range. The 23 April record represents the earliest nesting commencement for terrapins in the Savannah, GA region since we began recording data in 2004.

Thank you,

Subject: [Dtwg] Terrapin Nesting Activity 2020

All,

In keeping with tradition, I'd like to report that Carolina Diamondback Terrapins (M. t. centrata) have begun nesting in Georgia. The 2020 nesting season began roughly one week prior to its 2019 commencement.

The first reports from the Downing-Musgrove Causeway connecting Brunswick to Jekyll Island, GA occurred on 16 April. Nesting in the Savannah, GA region, ~65 mi north of Brunswick, began during the last week of April.

Stay safe and happy terrapin season 2020!
