[Dtwg] [External] More Virginia terps

Would you like me to put my friend in contact with you? She is retired after being the intro bio labs coordinator at Yale Univ. for close to 25 years. She understands the molecular work and pop gen methods. The site where those DBTs come on land is her mom’s house in Old Saybrook and my friend regularly sees DBTs when she visits her mom this time of year, so the local population there might be good to sample. Just let me know.

Cheers,
Jon

Thank you, Jon. Interestingly enough, I hypothesize that this phenotype of terrapin is relegated to Long Island Sound, and potentially Block Island Sound. They typically feature a plain yellowish plastron and ventral marginals, an inverted subocular dark crescent or stripe on the cheek, and often feature a whitish peripheral stripe on the limbs.

I have inquired to those in the hobby for whom I have seen this phenotype and the owner has in each instance traced the individual back to Long Island Sound. I would be interested in seeing a genetic study performed on those terrapins occupying Long Island Sound, as the phenotype sticks out amongst M. t. terrapin to the same degree as Southwest Florida M. t. macrospilota does from specimens from the more northerly extent of their range.

Sounds like a project for Nancy Karraker!

Good friend of mine observed and photographed this large female DBT coming out of a saltmarsh in Old Saybrook, CT, cross her yard, and enter the edge of the woods. In previous years, the DBTs have been nesting there. This was noonish on 3 June 2022.

Saw some nesting at the Marine Nature Study Area in Nassau County, Long Island on Saturday (6/04), but still no nesting at JFK yet. We’re usually a couple of days behind the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
