Ray traced-based rendering techniques include algorithms such as: ray casting, recursive ray tracing, and path tracing. These algorithms result in high fidelity renders and can accurately simulate the behavior of natural light at the cost of extreme computational cost. The use of these algorithms due to this cost has been limited to the realm of cinema and visual effects. However, with modern advancements in GPU architectures, application of ray traced-based algorithms has made its way into the world of real-time rendering in video games. When combined with specialized hardware, this opens the door to realistic shadows and reflections with little compromise in real-time rendering. This course will cover the basics of ray tracing algorithms and the fundamental concepts which will equip students with the skills needed to write their own toy ray tracer.
