A note from our speaker, William "Bill" Walker: "On a hill overlooking the First Ward of Pomeroy, through which Kerrs (Kars) Run flows and where in 1869 he relocated his family, Joseph Jones, a free black man from Virginia, was building a house with bedrooms enough for each of his boys. Sometime in the 1880’s, the Kerrs Run Colored School, a one room frame building, would open its door offering grades one through eight educational opportunities for his and the other children of the African American families of this predominantly black community. The presentation on May 19th will provide an overview of this community, the school and the graduates' significant influence on southern Ohio, the state, nation and even the world. This period of rich Meigs County and southern Ohio African American history deserves to be told and preserved." -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
