 I am the director of the NSF-funded Real-World Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program at the National Weather Center in Norman, Oklahoma. We have an exciting program that pairs undergraduate students with research mentors to conduct a project in the wide-ranging meteorology, climate, and interdisciplinary topics being researched here. Students receive a stipend, free housing, a travel allowance, and travel funds to present their work at the national conference that best suits them.* In addition to research, I help the students learn more about the many careers in and around meteorology to help them explore and find career options that suit them well. We also have workshops and one-on-one mentoring to help students build skills needed to succeed.
 Students interested in the program are required to submit an application, two reference letters, and their official college transcript(s). To be eligible for the program students must be enrolled in a 2- or 4-year college degree program and be a US citizen or permanent resident of the US.
 We traditionally recruit from meteorology, STEM and related disciplines (like computer science), but have a few opportunities for students majoring fields that intersect with meteorology, including psychology, human factors, sociology, communications, and similar. We are also interested in receiving applications from science education majors.
 All applications and related materials for the 2014 REU are due no later than February 12, 2014 for full consideration.
