This is a non-tenure track, clinical faculty position. Successful candidates will be expected to engage in professional service activities, consistent with the Libraries' and University's requirements for promotion. The Map & GIS Library is devoted to geospatial collections and reports through the Associate Dean for Special Collections and Director, Cushing Memorial Library and Archives. The library holds state, national and worldwide GIS data and serves as the GIS archives for the local municipal governments, collaborates in campus-wide GIS activities, and user education services. The geospatial data collections are used by researchers campus wide from many disciplines and also support the University's degree and certificate in GIS. Members of the Map & GIS Library (MGL) staff cooperate to provide comprehensive geospatial services, incorporating print, web and data resources. The map collection consists of more than 250,000 print maps and extensive collections of aerial photos and digitized maps, and 2 TB geospatial data. The campus holds a site license for Esri software that the MGL distributes. The library is well known for co-hosting the campus-wide GIS Day, and will have a significant role in the development of a campus level GIS&T Center. The Map & GIS Library has the high distinction of being awarded the Esri 'Special Achievement in GIS' Award in 2014. Reporting to the Coordinator of the Map & GIS Library, the Geospatial Librarian: * Responds to GIS patron consultations and requests * Develops and delivers instruction and outreach on GIS in all subjects, often collaborating with subject librarians * Develops guides, FAQs and tutorials for GIS techniques * Collaborates with the GIS Coordinator to train and oversee GIS student employees in their interactions with patrons and special projects * Supports local and regional GIS data curation, conversion, management, preservation and metadata creation * Creates and maintains database for aerial photo indexes * Assists in the development of the Map & GIS Library website * Supports ongoing project development including Mapping Historic Aggieland * Participates in planning outreach events including GIS Day * Consults on campus digital humanities collaborations Required Qualifications: * American Library Association (ALA)-accredited Master's degree, or Ph.D. in GIS related field * Two years of GIS-related work experience or coursework * Experience in a library, data center, research or academic environment * Experience with geospatial data formats and GIS software including Esri ArcGIS * Knowledge of geospatial data sources and data curation * Knowledge of geospatial database design and geospatial metadata * Excellent oral and written communication skills, including writing of technical documentation * Demonstrated commitment to providing customer service * Experience working successfully with persons from culturally diverse backgrounds Desired Qualifications: * GIS certificate or advanced degree in GIS * Familiarity with ArcGIS Server and web mapping services * Understanding of Esri software licensing and technical support protocols * Knowledge of programming/scripting with Python and/or web application development (Java, PHP, JavaScript or Flex) * Demonstrated interpersonal and teamwork skills complemented by the ability to take initiative * Knowledge of Texas and/or United States geography * Experience with teaching and developing user-oriented digital and written tutorials * Evidence of successful project management ENVIRONMENT: The University: Founded in 1876 as a land-grant institution, Texas A&M University is the sixth largest university in the nation.
