Funded Graduate Assistantships for Spring 2015 entry into Geography Graduate programs at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte.
The Department of Geography and Earth Sciences at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte (UNC Charlotte) is now accepting applications for Spring 2015 entry into our Masters in Geography and PhD in Geography and Urban Regional Analysis programs.
To be considered for one of our competitive Graduate Assistantships for Spring 2015 (which include a generous living stipend and in some cases tuition support), completed applications should be submitted to the UNC Charlotte Graduate School by October 1, 2014 although the Department will continue to review applications for admission after that date. For those interested in Fall 2015 entry, the priority deadline for admission and funding consideration is February 15, 2015.
The M.A. in Geography at UNC Charlotte emphasizes the application of geographic skills, methods, and theory to problem solving in contemporary society. To this end, students are offered a solid foundation in research methods, problem formulation and solution, quantitative methods, computer applications and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Given the applied nature of our program, and the department's strong ties with the local community, students are encouraged and assisted to complete their programs with either funded or unfunded internships in the private or public sectors.
The Ph.D. in Geography and Urban Regional Analysis at UNC Charlotte is focused on the theoretical and empirical analysis of metropolitan areas and their broader regional, national, and global contexts. At the core of the program is the recognition that cities are complex systems made up of environmental and human elements, with critical multi-scalar interactions and outcomes. Although the processes and issues that frame urban-regional analysis are global in scope, the research lens of the Ph.D. program is focused on the United States, and, especially regional topics and research questions. Indeed, the Charlotte area and other urban and metropolitan regions in the southeastern United States offer laboratories for examining economic, social, and environmental change processes that are at work across the world.
Building on the strengths and scholarly interests of our graduate faculty and colleagues across campus, there are currently three broad research clusters within the doctoral program and 4 areas of concentration within the masters program within which students focus their study.
At the Doctoral level students are engaged in course work, professional development and original research in the areas of:
1) urban/regional systems
2) human-environmental interactions
3) geographic information science and technologies (GIS&T)
At the Masters level students focus their study and skill building in the areas of:
1. locational analysis
2. urban/regional analysis
3. geographic information science & technologies (GIS&T)
4. community planning

Our more than 50 Geography graduate students and 30 faculty have active and applied research agendas focusing on topics such as: urban sustainability and resilience; the suburbanization of poverty; immigrant settlement, adjustment and receptivity in non-traditional gateways; ethnic entrepreneurialism and minority labor markets; community health and neighborhood quality of life, participatory and action based research and planning; transportation and mobility systems; global trade and comparative urbanism; cyber-infrastructure and GeoComputation; urban land use and land-cover change; regional economic development in Appalachia; post-industrial transformation of North Carolina; the effects of urbanization on biodiversity; environmental planning in human-dominated landscapes; habitat quality in cities; green infrastructure; sport and economic development.
