The GeoKEA research group ( http://geokea.ac.nz<http://geokea.ac.nz/ >) at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand is offering a fully-funded, full-time 3 year PhD scholarship in geoinformatics. Particular topics of interest include novel analysis methods on unstructured geospatial data (such as text and images), geographic and historical information retrieval and exploratory search user interfaces (see e.g., http://frankenplace.com<http://frankenplace.com/ >), spatial narrative systems, and artificial intelligence for geographic knowledge discovery. Enthusiastic candidates with interests related to these topics are encouraged to apply. As part of the position you will have the opportunity to use high-performance computing systems and work with big data, if it suits the topic. Candidates with a Masters degree (or equivalent) in computer science, geoinformatics, or geographic information science are encouraged to apply. Candidates coming from other disciplines, such as geography, cognitive science or digital humanities are also encouraged to apply, given you have a strong technical background. Good working experience with at least one programming language (Python, Java, C++, etc.) is a prerequisite to the position, but the most important quality is a desire to do creative original research at the intersection of GIScience and computer science.
