PhD Excellence Program at the University at Buffalo This fall, the University at Buffalo, SUNY introduced a new initiative called the PhD Excellence Initiative to strengthen the quality of students in our PhD programs and to increase their success rates. The new scheme includes the following components: 1. Five year funding packages; 2. Minimum salaries starting at $20,800; 3. Full tuition and fee waivers; 4. Minimum teaching obligations with teaching relief for two of the five years. Top students will be nominated for a Presidential fellowship, which increases the stipend by an additional $7,500 if awarded. Domestic students who meet diversity criteria can also be recruited via the Schomburg program.
